Temporary shop closure due to Covid-19

Bike Pirates will be closed until Monday March 23, in light of current precautions to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
An educational DIY repair space is, by its very nature, a place where people interact closely and touch many of the same objects. In addition, our ongoing renovations mean we do not have the ability to implement adequate safety protocols at this time.
Therefore, we will be closed for the time being out of an abundance of caution. We will re-evaluate weekly, based on guidance from public health authorities, and post an announcement on Saturdays as to whether we will be open the following week.
Stay safe everyone!

We’re Open at The New Place!!

Bike Pirates is (um, are?)  happy, nay, *delighted*,  to announce that we are up and running at our new location, 1564 Bloor St West here in west Toronto.  We haven’t moved *that* far — we are now on the north side of Bloor Street about a half-block west of where Bloor St meets Dundas West/Roncesvalles, convenient to the Dundas West Subway Station and its associated buses and streetcars.  We are also handy to the Toronto West Railpath, just take the Bloor exit and head west a block and a half, and to the Bloor GO station.  Can’t ask for more convenient!  Well, yes we can, but it seems that the Bike Lanes on Bloor will be coming out to us in the near future.  Woo hoo, at that point Bike Pirates will be at the absolute hub of the bicycle universe!

Now we are not quite all set up, but we can do the important things;  coffee, most repairs, the washroom works, we can find most stuff and (most important!!) the debit machine works.  Oh, and we have about a dozen reasonably-priced refurbished bikes to help you deal with that extra hour of daylight and spring break.

So:  hours the same as ever, ie,

  • Mon and Tues 5:00pm to 9:00pm
  • Thurs and Sat 12:00noon to 7:00pm
  • Sundays for women and transpersons only, 12:00noon to 6:00pm

Orientations and such:

First Wednesday of each month, 7:00pm to about 8:30pm — orientation for new volunteers.  Come on down, we will be happy to see you!

Second Wednesday of every month, 7:00pm to about 8:30pm — mechanical orientation.  For Pirates volunteers and *everybody*, an in-depth look at specific bike culture topics.  Past topics have included bottom bracket (conventional, cartridge, threading, and more), headsets (standard, threadless, BMX), winter riding, legal info for cyclists,  safety checks, bike touring in Mexico, tax info for “self-employed” riders/drivers (Uber, Foodora, Skip, etc.), and nutrition.  Got a bicycle question?  Come on down and ask*, we could do a workshop just for you!

Whether you are wanting to (learn to) fix your bike, volunteer with us, get some parts or just hang out, come on down!  We will be delighted to see you.
