We are now offering Minor Repair Service!!!
(There is a lot of information below. Please read ALL of it carefully before coming to the shop for a repair.)
Bike Pirates is *temporarily* performing minor repairs to get your bikes back in rideable shape! This is a new format and an experiment for us, so please be patient as we work out the kinks.
WHAT:
One repair per visit. We will perform quick adjustments and minor repairs only, ones that would generally take a mechanic 30 minutes or less.
Examples of such repairs are below. These are only examples:
– flat tire fix, installing new tires and/or tubes
– lubing a rusty chain, greasing stuck parts, etc.
– brake adjustments and installing new brake pads
– adjustments to make your gears work: derailleur limits, cable tension, etc.
– tightening bolts or loose components
– installing a rack or basket
– replacing a broken pedal
– replacing a brake or gear cable
– overall safety check (we will not do this AND repairs at the same time, one or the other)
We’ll do as much as possible to explain to you what we did and why, so that you understand your bike better.
If we cannot fix your bike: if there are too many things wrong with your bike, or the repair is too complicated for us to do in the available time, we will give you a written ‘prescription’ of what needs to be repaired. You can then take this to a commercial repair shop if desired.
Examples of things we will not do as a minor repair (not an exhaustive list):
– build bikes from scratch
– overhaul and repack bottom brackets, wheel hubs, or headsets
– perform extensive wheel truing
– any repair that requires dismantling and fixing multiple components of a bike
WHEN:
Saturdays 12pm to 4pm
HOW MUCH:
PWYC (pay what you can), $10-$30 suggested donation. $10 for a very quick adjustment, $30 or more suggested for a repair that takes approximately half an hour, or that involves installing a part. Please ask if you’re not sure where your repair fits in. If you’re able to give more than the minimum, it will really help us pay our rent during this difficult period
Used and new part prices are additional to this cost.
*If you cannot afford the minimum suggested donation, we may still be able to help you, but please be up front with us about what you can afford to pay.* We’d love to be able to do this for free, but Toronto rent makes that impossible.
HOW:
First-come first-served, as with Bike Pirates DIY in the past. We will keep a written waiting list, but will cut off the list when volunteers feel the repair time is full.
No drop-off or storage of bikes is permitted. You must wait in the area while your bike is being repaired — you cannot drop off your bike and then pick it up another day. If we finish one repair but your bike is still not rideable, you still must take your bike home.
