We require a lot of hands on deck just to keep the space running. Anyone can volunteer at Bike Pirates, and there are lots of ways to do it. If you would like to help out in any way, please contact and we’ll invite you to the next volunteer training session.
Here are some ways you can volunteer:
- Fix bikes and help others While we do need volunteers with wrenching experience, we also encourage people eager to learn more about bikes to come in and volunteer. Fixing up donated and participants’ bikes is a great way to gain experience, and there will always be someone knowledgeable around to offer advice and assistance.
- Greeting Bike Pirates runs like a well-oiled machine when there’s someone sitting at the front desk, explaining our system to new guests and helping them find the help they need. It’s a good way to start to feel comfortable in the space and make friends with other volunteers. Volunteers helping out at the front of the shop are crucial!
- Cooking We always need help in the “galley” so if you feel like helping out by cooking meals for guests and volunteers in our kitchen, we’d love to hear from you.
- General help We need help keeping the place clean and organized, so if you’re into sorting parts come on in. It’s also a great way to learn how the shop is organized while looking for that special part you need.
- Driving We also need folks who can pick up donations and drop off leftover scrap metal. If you have access to a large vehicle, please let us know.
- Construction We’re always improving our physical space, so if you have construction skills and you’re willing to help us out, let us know and we’ll find a project for you to work on. When we moved into the current space, there was no kitchen at the back, and no bathroom—it was all built by dedicated volunteers.
- Swag We’re always in need of more Bike Pirates swag to sell. If you can make t-shirts, buttons, stickers or other Bike Pirate gear, please let us know.
- Social Events Fun events need energy and creativity to happen. Can you design flyers, DJ, sing, or host? Do you want to work the door, make popcorn, or help clean up? Past events have included concerts, film nights, community meals, scavenger hunts, group rides, and dance parties.
